African Griots (pronounced "gree-oh"), the historians and storytellers for their community, inspired Maryland's Afro-centric storytellers to create the Griots' Circle of Maryland, Inc.  The purpose of the Griots' Circle of Maryland is as follows: To perpetuate and to promote the art of Afro-American storytelling, folklore, and history. To provide programs for the preservation, dissemination, and research in the African folkloric tradition as it supports Afro-American storytelling. To facilitate the presentation of Maryland’s Afro-American folklore, history, and storytelling research. To use the oral tradition to pass down the Afro-American folk heritage  through special programs and training sessions, as well as other appropriate means. Griots' Circle of Maryland Is a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization. The Griots' Circle of Maryland, Inc. is an affiliate of the National Association of Black Storytellers (NABS).
